Build a small room. Arm two players. Let them kill each other. Over and over and over and over and over. Call it "Winning."

It examines the dynamic of popular First-Person Shooter videogames. By limiting the game space to a small room with two players, I've removed any overt reason to play the game in order to highlight the basic dynamic of violence. Both models, the terrorist and the counter-terrorist are wearing my smiling face, inverting the traditional place of a game avatar. It is not about fighting myself, but about about seeing myself and ourselves reflected in this perpetual cycle of violence and asking, "is this winning?". If there are no human players, then the cycle is broken. The game world persists, quietly, calmly.

built with the source engine, using hammer, based-off of counter-strike: source and using custom skins.

an installation at NP3, in Groningen, The Netherlands. Nov - Dec, 2008

The bright, plastic colors disarm the senses and create an expectation of frivolity, yet the compositions tell a darker tale.

I chose my material carefully. I was attracted to my free-play memories of a childhood surrounded by bins of these toys. In these memories I saw direct links to the free-play sentimentality of today's open source, rapid-prototyping movements. I sought a way to bridge these two ideas. I wanted to convert the joy I found in free-play to the need I have to make art.

I used the simple K'nex motors to create a constantly shifting juxtaposition. To show the unstable, yet cyclical nature inherent in all of our stories.

Oude Natuurmuseum, Groningen, NL. June - July 2009
Roxaboxen, Chicago, IL. October, 2010

I used a simple video game hardware hack to subtly change the dynamics of DOOM2's death-match mode in an effort to subvert the traditional game-play.

3 players experience the game space as an abstracted kaleidoscope while the 4th sees what was originally intended.

The hack serves to change the relationships between the players. Restructuring the original ritual-combat. Both as the typical aggressive power-play and as a new hypnotic experience of the beauty within the machine.

For me, it's about play and the unfettered joy and agony of experience. It is about how we ritualize these experiences in an effort to share with each other.

Whether we share pain or pleasure is up to us.

If You Play It Too Often, It Loses Its Meaning is an exploration of interconnected surreal digital compositions.

Each moveMeant is an investigation of a theme through time and space.
moveMeants are built around whatever thoughts/feelings I'm having at the time. The composition as a whole is arranged and rearranged continuously. The order/connections between moveMeants for one exhibition maybe entirely different for another.

YPTOLM is never complete.
YPTOLM is always in flux.

And The Dreams of The Many (ADOTM) is the latest in my series of K'NEX-based installations.

Created specifically for Science Fair, a huge local group exhibition in January, 2010, This hands-on piece further explores thoughts and feelings about war, personal sacrifice, and the facelessness of the group.

REDACTED PERFECTION was a group exhibition at Drift Station curated by Jeff Thompson and Angeles Cossio.

It ran from February 4 - March 2, 2011.
I put a few stills from my WYWT series in the show.

from the release:
"Beginning with a photograph, the image in these works is in one way or another obscured - whether through blur, low resolution, collage, etc or having been subjected to a process (transform, encrust, redact, translate, sift, distill, etc). The resulting works disrupt the representational image and elucidate something new."<img src="http://payload20.cargocollective.com/1/6/196155/2713556/WYWT36.jpg" width="670" height="446" width_o="720" height_o="480" src_o="http://payload20.cargocollective.com/1/6/196155/2713556/WYWT36_o.jpg" data-mid="13757250" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload20.cargocollective.com/1/6/196155/2713556/WYWT37.jpg" width="670" height="446" width_o="720" height_o="480" src_o="http://payload20.cargocollective.com/1/6/196155/2713556/WYWT37_o.jpg" data-mid="13757251" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload20.cargocollective.com/1/6/196155/2713556/WYWT38.jpg" width="670" height="446" width_o="720" height_o="480" src_o="http://payload20.cargocollective.com/1/6/196155/2713556/WYWT38_o.jpg" data-mid="13757252" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload20.cargocollective.com/1/6/196155/2713556/WYWT39.jpg" width="670" height="446" width_o="720" height_o="480" src_o="http://payload20.cargocollective.com/1/6/196155/2713556/WYWT39_o.jpg" data-mid="13757255" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload20.cargocollective.com/1/6/196155/2713556/WYWT40.jpg" width="670" height="446" width_o="720" height_o="480" src_o="http://payload20.cargocollective.com/1/6/196155/2713556/WYWT40_o.jpg" data-mid="13757258" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload20.cargocollective.com/1/6/196155/2713556/WYWT41.jpg" width="670" height="446" width_o="720" height_o="480" src_o="http://payload20.cargocollective.com/1/6/196155/2713556/WYWT41_o.jpg" data-mid="13757261" border="0" align="left"/>

Find & Replace / performance / Drift Station / Gallery April 1, 2011
Alex Myers* // Video
Jeff Thompson // Audio

from the release:

"During the opening, Alex Myers and Jeff Thompson will present a live video and audio performance that builds from the fundamental units of computer files. Myers' live video performance looks like a mix of geometric minimalist painting and a Skype video chat on a dialup modem; created by manipulating the file structure of an existing video file. Similarly, Thompson's audio performance sonifies raw data such as Photoshop and AutoCAD files. Manipulating the playback parameters using custom software, the files become streams of droning tones and skittering, grinding noise."

*thanks, Joe, for all the help with the code!
